Our Name

The name “Ruweng” carries deep cultural and historical significance. In the Jieeng (Dinka) language, “Ru” signifies sunrise, while “Weng” refers to cattle, reflecting a unique heritage of migration and cultural identity.

The people of the Ruweng region, despite their diversity, share common historical narratives and face mutual ecological and economic challenges. They communicate through widely spoken languages, including Thong De Jieeng (Jieeng language), English, and Sudanese Arabic.

Since its inception, Ruweng Post has expanded its audience and scope to include an increasingly diverse range of communities and cultural contexts.

Within the areas we serve, numerous tribes coexist, each with its own cultural identity and traditions. However, shared experiences and cultural similarities foster mutual understanding among these groups. Communities in Sudan and South Sudan are interconnected, engaging with one another through governance, commerce, social interactions, and intermarriage.

Consequently, many individuals within our coverage area navigate multiple cultural contexts with ease. The concept of “Ruweng”—mixing—aptly captures this reality, symbolizing hospitality, shared languages, common artistic and culinary traditions, and intertwined histories.

Ruweng Post draws upon these shared cultural elements to build strong organic audience engagement. We interpret “Ruweng” not as a fixed ideology, but as a reflection of the interconnected lives and experiences of the communities we serve. This foundation encourages audience participation and fosters a collective sense of identity throughout our broadcast region.
